Questions

Is Cloudflare free for startups?

Cloudflare has a permanent free plan that includes CDN, DDoS protection, SSL, DNS management, and Cloudflare Workers (10M requests/month). Cloudflare for Startups adds $10,000 in credits for one year for bootstrapped or self-funded startups with under $1 million raised. Credits cover Workers, R2 (up to $10,000), D1, KV, Pages and other usage-based products. Pro and Business plans, DDoS protection and the WAF are included at no cost. Startups backed by a Cloudflare-affiliated partner can get $100,000 or $350,000.

How does Cloudflare improve website performance?

Cloudflare improves performance through four mechanisms: CDN caching (serving static assets from the nearest of 300+ global edge locations), image optimization (resizing and compressing images on-the-fly), minification (reducing CSS/JS/HTML file sizes), and Argo Smart Routing (optimizing traffic paths through Cloudflare's private backbone network). Combined, these typically reduce page load times by 20-50%.

Does Cloudflare affect my ability to debug server logs?

Yes, once traffic flows through Cloudflare, your origin server sees Cloudflare's IP addresses instead of real visitor IPs. To preserve real visitor IPs in your logs, configure your web server to read the CF-Connecting-IP header (which Cloudflare passes) instead of the standard REMOTE_ADDR. Nginx and Apache both have simple configurations for this.

What is Cloudflare Workers and how does it work?

Cloudflare Workers is a serverless compute platform that runs your code at Cloudflare's edge, in the same data centers that serve your CDN content. Workers run in response to HTTP requests and can modify requests/responses, run business logic, query databases (D1, KV), and return custom responses, all within milliseconds of users globally. Workers use the V8 JavaScript engine (same as Chrome) and support TypeScript, Python, and WebAssembly.

Is Cloudflare R2 really free to egress?

Yes, Cloudflare R2 charges zero for data egress (outbound transfer). AWS S3 charges $0.09/GB for egress to the internet. For a startup serving 1TB/month of user content, R2 saves $90/month in egress alone, scaling to thousands per month for high-traffic applications. R2 storage costs are comparable to S3 ($0.015/GB/month vs S3's $0.023/GB/month).

Does Cloudflare work with any hosting provider?

Yes, Cloudflare is hosting-agnostic. It works with any server or hosting provider (AWS, DigitalOcean, Vercel, Railway, Render, bare metal, etc.) by proxying traffic through Cloudflare's network. The only requirement is that you use Cloudflare's nameservers for your domain. Your hosting provider and infrastructure do not change.
