ChromaDB is genuinely free as open-source software (Apache 2.0 license). Chroma Cloud (managed) has usage-based pricing TBD. Real-world ChromaDB costs are $0 for the framework; you pay infrastructure if self-hosting.

The Free & Open Source offer covers everything for self-hosting. The strategic decision: ChromaDB's value is the developer-experience focus: simple Python/TypeScript SDKs, in-memory or persistent storage, and an architecture optimized for prototyping and small-to-medium scale RAG. For broader vector database alternatives, Pinecone is the dominant managed alternative and wins on production-scale operational maturity at higher cost. Weaviate competes on hybrid search (vector + keyword + filters) with stronger structured-data capabilities. Qdrant is another open-source alternative with excellent performance and permissive license. Milvus targets enterprise scale with more operational complexity. For Postgres-based teams, pgvector (via Supabase, Neon, or native Postgres) is frequently the right choice for sub-10M-vector workloads — joining vectors with relational data in one query is architecturally cleaner. Elasticsearch and OpenSearch added vector capabilities — competitive when search is part of broader log/analytics use. For managed vector search at the edge, Turbopuffer and Upstash Vector compete.
