The criticism is that Replicate's pricing for specific workloads (especially LLMs) trails dedicated alternatives.

For Stable Diffusion specifically, Fal.ai has emerged as faster and cheaper. For custom-model deployment with production performance, Modal and Baseten offer similar capability at potentially lower cost. Replicate is the right choice specifically for rapid model exploration and prototyping; production workloads typically migrate to specialized inference platforms once the right model is identified.
