About Columbia Startup Lab
Columbia Startup Lab is a subsidized coworking space in SoHo, Manhattan, for startups founded by Columbia University alumni. It opened in June 2014. It is a workspace and community program, not a funded accelerator. There is no investment, and residents pay a monthly seat fee.
The lab is backed by Columbia Entrepreneurship and several Columbia schools, including Columbia College, Columbia Business School, Columbia Engineering, SIPA and the Law School. Each year it admits a cohort of resident ventures. The 2026 to 2027 cohort lists 20 companies.
Seat pricing is the main term. A Columbia alum pays $325 per month in the first year and $425 per month in a returning second year. Team members who are not Columbia graduates pay $695 per month. Teams can stay up to one year per cohort, and Columbia-affiliated tenants must commit to at least four months.
Every team needs at least one founding member who graduated from Columbia University. Recent alumni from across the university can apply, including Barnard, as can EMBA candidates who work full time on their venture. Past residents include Daily Harvest, Kaia Health, Amper Music, Text IQ and Kinnos.
Applications for the 2026 to 2027 cohort closed on March 31, 2026. Columbia says the next cycle opens in March 2027, and the lab accepts waitlist applications in the meantime.
What Columbia Startup Lab looks for
The core requirement is a Columbia connection: at least one founder must be a Columbia graduate. Recent alumni from across the university are eligible, including Barnard, and EMBA candidates qualify if they work full time on the venture. The lab does not publish revenue or funding requirements. Seats are limited, with 20 ventures in the 2026 to 2027 cohort, so teams that will work from the space regularly get the most out of it.
How the Columbia Startup Lab program works
The lab runs on an annual cohort cycle. Applications open in March, and the selected cohort moves in afterward. Residents get a desk in the SoHo space for up to one year, with a minimum four-month commitment for Columbia-affiliated tenants.
Pricing is per seat: $325 per month for a first-year Columbia alum, $425 for a returning second-year alum and $695 for non-Columbia team members. Beyond space, the lab offers tailored programming for residents and links them to Columbia Entrepreneurship events and the wider alumni network. Because every resident team has a Columbia founder, much of the value comes from peer support inside the space.

Columbia Startup Lab FAQ
When is the Columbia Startup Lab application deadline?+
Columbia Startup Lab has not announced its next deadline yet (2027 to 2028 cohort; applications open March 2027 (waitlist open now)). We check the official site every month and update this page when dates are published.
Who can apply to Columbia Startup Lab?+
Teams need at least one founding member who graduated from Columbia University. Recent alumni from across the university can apply, including Barnard graduates. EMBA candidates who work full time on their venture are eligible too. Other team members do not need a Columbia degree, but they pay a higher seat fee.
How much does Columbia Startup Lab cost?+
Seats are charged monthly. A Columbia alum pays $325 per month in the first year and $425 per month in a returning second year. Team members who are not Columbia graduates pay $695 per month. The lab does not invest money in residents, so the seat fee is the main cost.
Does Columbia Startup Lab take equity?+
Columbia's Startup Lab page does not mention any equity requirement or investment. The model is subsidized coworking paid through monthly seat fees, not investment. Any funding you need has to come from investors, competitions or programs outside the lab itself.
