How to choose a startup accelerator
Start with the terms. Programs on this list invest anywhere from nothing to several million dollars, and take from 0% to more than 10% of your company. A program that invests $500,000 for 7% values your startup very differently from one that invests $50,000 for the same stake, so compare the money and the equity together, not one at a time.
Then look at where and how it runs. Some programs require you to move to San Francisco, New York or London for three months. Others are remote or run in many cities. If your customers or co-founders are elsewhere, a local or remote program can be worth more than a famous one.
Check who has come out of it. Alumni companies tell you which investors show up on demo day and which industries the program knows well. A hardware startup gets more from HAX than from a software program, and a deep tech team gets more from Creative Destruction Lab or SOSV.
Finally, plan around the deadlines. The big programs fill their winter and spring cohorts between October and February. Apply to two or three programs that fit, and get your deck and metrics ready before the first deadline.
What you get after you are accepted
Beyond the investment, accepted startups qualify for credits worth far more than the check from most accelerators: cloud credits from AWS Activate and Google Cloud, plus discounts on the tools every new company needs. See the full list of free startup credits.
Startup accelerator FAQ
What is a startup accelerator?+
A startup accelerator is a fixed-length program, usually three to six months, that invests a small amount in early-stage startups in exchange for equity, then gives them mentorship, investor introductions and a demo day. Y Combinator and Techstars are the best-known examples.
What is the difference between an accelerator and an incubator?+
Accelerators run in cohorts with a fixed start and end date, usually invest money and take equity, and end with a demo day for investors. Incubators are open-ended, often take no equity, and focus on giving very early teams space and support to develop an idea.
How much equity do accelerators take?+
Most take between 5% and 10%. Y Combinator takes 7% for its standard deal, Techstars takes 5% for $220,000, and ERA takes 6% for $150,000. Some programs, like MassChallenge, Creative Destruction Lab and Plug and Play, take no equity at all.
Are startup accelerators worth it?+
For first-time founders, a top accelerator usually pays for its equity through investor access, a peer group and a deadline that forces progress. For experienced founders with investor networks, the trade is less clear. Compare the funding, the equity taken and the alumni outcomes of each program before applying.
When do accelerator applications open?+
Most large programs run two or more cohorts a year. Applications for winter and spring cohorts usually close between October and February. Check each program page on this list for the current deadline, or rolling admissions where they apply.
