What is Techstars?
Techstars is one of the largest startup accelerators in the world. It was founded in Boulder, Colorado, in 2006 by David Cohen, Brad Feld, David Brown and Jared Polis. It runs three-month, mentorship-driven programs in cities and industry verticals, often in partnership with corporations, universities and health systems. Every accepted company receives $220,000 on day one. That is split into a $20,000 convertible equity agreement that becomes 5% common stock at a priced round of at least $1 million, and a $200,000 uncapped MFN SAFE that takes the best terms of later SAFEs issued before that round. Asia-Pacific programs use a $100,000 MFN SAFE instead, for $120,000 in total. Techstars now focuses its accelerators on four verticals: health, finance, space and defense, and critical infrastructure. Programs open for the Spring 2027 cycle include Boston, Chicago, New York City, London, Techstars AI Health Baltimore, the Northwestern Medicine healthcare accelerator, the USC accelerator and Techstars Anywhere, which runs remotely. Its mentor network is the core of the model, and each program assigns founders a set of experienced operators and investors. Alumni include Remitly, whose co-founder and CEO Matt Oppenheimer is a Techstars success story, along with SendGrid, DigitalOcean, ClassPass and PillPack.
How the Techstars program works
Each Techstars accelerator runs for three months with a cohort of about 10 to 12 companies. The first weeks are known as mentor madness, when founders meet dozens of mentors and choose a small group to work with closely. The rest of the program is weekly goal setting with the managing director, plus workshops on fundraising, sales and hiring. Most programs are in person in their host city. Techstars Anywhere runs remotely. Corporate and university partners in vertical programs, such as health and finance, provide industry experts and pilot opportunities. The program ends with Demo Day, scheduled for around June 3, 2027 for the Spring 2027 cycle. Founders join the Techstars alumni network and keep access to perks and investor introductions.
What Techstars looks for
Techstars invests in early-stage startups with a strong team, a large market and early momentum. Its accelerators now focus on health, finance, space and defense, and critical infrastructure, though some city programs remain broad. Each program has its own managing director, so fit with that program's focus matters. Companies must be a US corporation or an approved foreign equivalent, or be willing to restructure before investment.

Techstars FAQ
When is the Techstars application deadline?+
The current Techstars deadline is November 18, 2026, for Spring 2027 (programs start March 8, 2027; Demo Day around June 3, 2027). Apply early: many programs review applications as they arrive.
How much equity does Techstars take?+
Techstars invests $220,000. A $20,000 convertible equity agreement converts into 5% common stock at a priced round of at least $1 million. The other $200,000 is an uncapped MFN SAFE, so its final stake depends on later rounds. At a $20M pre-money round, Techstars says it would add about 1%.
Which Techstars programs are open for Spring 2027?+
Techstars listed eight programs: Northwestern Medicine and Techstars Healthcare, Techstars AI Health Baltimore, Techstars Anywhere, Techstars Boston, Techstars Chicago, Techstars London, Techstars New York City and the USC and Techstars Accelerator. You can apply to more than one. Each program has its own managing director and focus.
Is there a remote Techstars program?+
Yes. Techstars Anywhere is a remote accelerator with the same investment terms. Most other Techstars programs are based in a city such as Boston, Chicago, New York or London and expect founders to take part in person. Techstars Anywhere was one of the eight programs open for Spring 2027.
