About Communitech
Communitech is the innovation hub for Waterloo Region in Ontario. A group of local tech entrepreneurs, including BlackBerry co-founder Jim Balsillie, started it in 1997 to put the region on the map. Its hub sits at 151 Charles Street West in Kitchener, and it also runs the Tannery Event Centre.
Communitech is not a cohort accelerator and does not invest in startups or take equity. Today it describes itself as a membership organization shaped by the people building tech in Waterloo Region. Membership comes in tiers.
Startup and Startup Premium cover companies under $1 million in revenue. Growth covers companies above $1 million. Champion is for local companies above $10 million.
Benefits include events, email support, preferred pricing on workspace and tech tools, founder peer groups, a named account manager at higher tiers, and the Work in Tech job board. Separate government-funded programs are open to every eligible company in the region, member or not. These include Growth Advisors, which gives one-on-one coaching to post-ideation founders in Southwestern Ontario.
Fierce Founders supports women and non-binary founders, with an Intensive Track aimed at reaching $1 million in revenue. Communitech has been through change. Sheldon McCormick, co-founder of Properly, became CEO in spring 2025, after a period of falling membership and a cut in provincial funding.
What Communitech looks for
Membership is open to tech companies in Waterloo Region, from early startups to large local employers, with tiers based on revenue. Growth Advisors requires a founder or executive leader at a post-ideation company based in Southwestern Ontario. The Fierce Founders Intensive Track is for women and non-binary founders working toward $1 million in revenue. Third-party guides say it requires a product in market and the ability to match funding. Communitech's focus is helping regional companies start, grow and succeed.
How the Communitech program works
Communitech has no fixed batch. Companies join as members at the tier that fits their revenue and then use benefits on their own timeline. Startup members get public events, email support and member pricing on workspace, tech credits and Pro Squad partners for legal, accounting and recruiting.
Startup Premium adds curated founder peer groups, a named account manager, invite-only events and a directory listing. Growth members get executive peer groups, marketing and PR support for milestones and government relations help. Programs run alongside membership.
Growth Advisors pairs eligible founders with experienced tech leaders for one-on-one guidance. Fierce Founders runs an Intensive Track for women and non-binary founders, plus skills sessions and the Tech x Women event series. AI@Work matches companies with local students to apply AI in their business.
Workspace runs from hot desks to private suites at the Communitech Hub.

Communitech FAQ
When is the Communitech application deadline?+
Communitech reviews applications on a rolling basis, so you can apply at any time.
Does Communitech invest in startups?+
No. Communitech is a membership organization and innovation hub, not an investor. It does not take equity. It offers events, peer groups, coaching, workspace, perks and connections. Some programs it delivers are government-funded. Third-party guides report that the Fierce Founders Intensive Track has offered $50,000 in matching funds, but confirm current terms with Communitech.
How much does Communitech membership cost?+
Communitech does not publish membership prices on its site. Tiers depend on company revenue: Startup and Startup Premium under $1 million, Growth above $1 million and Champion for local companies above $10 million. Fill in the membership form and the team will confirm the tier and price.
Do I need to be a member to use Communitech programs?+
Not for government-funded programs. Communitech says those are open to every eligible company in the region, member or not. Membership adds peer groups, account management and other benefits on top. Growth Advisors, for example, requires only that you are a founder or executive in Southwestern Ontario at post-ideation stage.
Has Communitech changed recently?+
Yes. Sheldon McCormick, co-founder of the real estate startup Properly, became CEO in spring 2025. Reporting by The Logic described a drop in membership after the pandemic and staff layoffs following a 30% cut in provincial funding. The current model centres on tiered membership, AI programs and leadership development.
