What is EIC Accelerator?

The EIC Accelerator is the European Commission's main funding instrument for startups and SMEs with breakthrough technology. It is run by the European Innovation Council under Horizon Europe. It is not a cohort program. It is a competitive funding call with several cut-off dates each year. Companies can receive a lump sum grant below €2.5M to cover innovation work at technology readiness levels 6 to 8, completed within 24 months. They can also receive an investment of €1M to €10M in equity or quasi-equity from the EIC Fund. Grant plus equity is called blended finance, and applicants can negotiate an increase of up to €2M at the final step. The grant itself takes no equity. For 2026, the EIC set a budget of €414M for Accelerator Open and €220M for Accelerator Challenges. The EIC targets companies with breakthrough products that need large amounts of capital that private investors still see as too risky. Single startups and SMEs, including spin-outs, can apply, as can people planning to set one up. Small mid-caps with up to 499 employees can apply for investment only. Applicants must be based in an EU Member State or a Horizon Europe associated country. UK applicants can apply for grant only.

How the EIC Accelerator program works

The EIC Accelerator is a funding call, not a residency. Selection runs in steps. First, a short proposal with a 12 page form, a pitch deck of up to 10 slides and a video of up to 3 minutes. Four experts evaluate it remotely. Second, a full proposal with a 20 page form, pitch deck, implementation plan, financials, letters of intent and freedom to operate analysis. Results take 8 to 9 weeks. Third, an interview with the EIC Jury, with results 2 to 3 weeks later. Fourth, contracting. Grant only winners sign a grant agreement. Blended finance winners go through investment due diligence that takes 2 to 6 months. Funded companies also get access to EIC Business Acceleration Services, such as coaching and corporate introductions.

What EIC Accelerator looks for

The EIC looks for innovative, breakthrough products, services or business models that could create new markets or disrupt existing ones. The technology should be at TRL 6 to 8, past lab validation and close to market. Applicants should commit to scaling up and need substantial funding that private investors alone consider too risky. The EIC also says it particularly welcomes applications from startups and SMEs with female CEOs.

How to apply to EIC Accelerator

  1. 1Submit a short proposal on the EU Funding and Tenders portal: a 12 page form, a pitch deck of up to 10 slides and a video pitch of up to 3 minutes. Short proposals are batched on the first Tuesday of each month.
  2. 2Wait about 4 to 6 weeks for the remote evaluation by four experts.
  3. 3If you pass, prepare the full proposal with a business plan, implementation plan, financials, letters of intent and an FTO analysis, and submit it by a cut-off date at 5pm Brussels time. The next is November 4, 2026.
  4. 4If invited, present to the EIC Jury in an interview. Results arrive 2 to 3 weeks after interview week.
  5. 5If selected, sign the grant agreement or start investment due diligence, which takes 2 to 6 months for blended finance.
