About Founder Institute

The Founder Institute is a pre-seed startup program founded in 2009 by Adeo Ressi. It runs through local chapters in more than 200 cities and online, and says it has helped launch over 9,000 companies. It is built for founders at the idea or very early stage, including people still in a full-time job.

The current format, called the FI Agentic Program, has 10 sessions plus a Funding Day in session 11. Most chapters run online feedback sessions alongside in-person events. Some cohorts, such as Silicon Valley AI, require in-person weeks. Founders get weekly assignments and feedback from local mentors, who are mostly founders and investors.

There is no cash investment. Founders pay a chapter entrance fee. Silicon Valley lists $1,099, and the Morocco fall 2026 cohort lists $599.

5 times the fee, and teams of 4 to 5 pay 2 times. The fee is fully refundable before kickoff and 75% refundable before session 3.5% to mentors, 1% to local leaders, and 1% to FI.

The warrant only activates after an outside equity financing of $100,000 or more, carries no board seat or voting rights, and is void if the company fails. FI says about 30% of applicants are admitted and fewer than 30% of those graduate.

What Founder Institute looks for

FI admits people over 18 who are prepared to incorporate a company during the program. It focuses on technology-enabled businesses and generally does not accept service companies like agencies or consultancies. A strong idea is not required at entry. FI relies on its Entrepreneur DNA Assessment, a psychometric and aptitude test, to judge founder traits. Commitment matters more than polish: fewer than 30% of admitted founders typically graduate, mostly because they drop out or fail to complete the weekly assignments.

How the Founder Institute program works

The FI Agentic Program has 10 sessions plus a Funding Day in session 11. Each session pairs a topic, such as customer validation, business model, or fundraising, with assignments that founders complete between sessions. Local mentors, typically founders and investors, review progress and give direct feedback.

Format depends on the chapter: most run online feedback sessions with in-person events, and some, like Silicon Valley AI, add required in-person weeks. The program is part-time, so many founders join while employed. Founders must incorporate during the program.

5% warrant from each graduating company and shares returns with mentors and local leaders. FI also provides access to its global alumni network and perks for graduates. Every cohort ends with a Funding Day where companies present to investors.
