About UM6P StartGate
StartGate is the startup campus of University Mohammed VI Polytechnic (UM6P), the research university in Benguerir backed by the OCP Group ecosystem. It has operated since 2020 and opened a second site in Rabat in December 2025. StartGate is not a single accelerator.
It is a hub that runs several programs, from student idea stage to venture building with corporate partners. Its homepage reports 346 startups supported across the UM6P ecosystem. The best-known entry point is UM6P Explorer, run with the MIT Sandbox Innovation Fund Program.
Explorer gives up to MAD 250,000 in equity-free seed funding, plus mentoring from UM6P and MIT Sandbox, help with customer discovery and access to UM6P labs and prototyping centres. It is open to early-stage founders, students, researchers, postdocs and professors, and solo founders can apply. It runs two cohorts a year.
The summer 2026 call closed on August 31, 2026. The Forge is UM6P's in-residence accelerator for African founders, run with the Ibn Rochd Foundation. Its first cohort drew more than 3,000 applications from 39 countries.
6 million in dilutive and non-dilutive funding. StartGate also runs sector programs such as the Moroccan Retail Tech Builder with the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the OCP Foundation, and the African Youth Climate Hub.
What UM6P StartGate looks for
Explorer looks for innovative ideas and research-based projects from early-stage founders, students, researchers, postdocs and professors. Applicants must commit to structured user interviews, test problem-solution fit and refine their product from customer feedback. Solo founders are accepted and helped with team matching. The Forge looks for ambitious early-stage tech founders, from Morocco and across Africa, who can commit full time to a campus residency. StartGate's own focus areas include agritech, greentech and fintech, and turning scientific research into products.
How the UM6P StartGate program works
Each StartGate program has its own format. UM6P Explorer runs two cohorts a year. Teams receive non-dilutive funding and work through a venture-building method focused on customer interviews, problem-solution fit, MVP building and iterative prototyping.
They also get access to UM6P research labs, prototyping centres and campus events. Teams from earlier cohorts can continue through a separate continuation form. The Forge is a full-time residency on the UM6P campus.
Its selection bootcamp is held in Benguerir. For the first cohort, 99 founders were invited and 33 were selected. Founders live and work on campus with support from more than 150 mentors, investors and executives, and finish with a Demo Day.
The first was held in Casablanca in May 2026. Industry programs such as the Moroccan Retail Tech Builder and the African Youth Climate Hub run as themed incubation and venture-building tracks with public and corporate partners.
