About Y Combinator Startup School

Startup School is a free online course run by Y Combinator, the Silicon Valley accelerator. It is not an accelerator. There is no investment, no equity and no selection for the online course. Anyone can sign up and work through the material at their own pace. YC says the course takes about 7 weeks if you spend 1 to 2 hours per week on it.

The curriculum is a set of recorded talks from YC partners and well-known founders. Topics include planning an MVP (Michael Seibel), modern startup funding (Carolynn Levy), getting users and growing (Gustaf Alstromer), launching in the press (Kat Manalac), leading teams (Ali Rowghani) and how and when to apply to YC (Dalton Caldwell). Founder stories come from Mark Zuckerberg on Facebook, Anne Wojcicki on 23andMe and Blake Scholl on Boom Supersonic.

Two tools sit next to the course. The first is co-founder matching, which YC describes as the world's largest co-founder matching platform, with over 100,000 matches made. The second is a weekly update tool for tracking growth and progress.

YC also runs a separate in-person Startup School event. The 2026 edition took place in San Francisco on July 25 and 26 for a hand-picked group of builders, and Sam Altman closed it in conversation with YC's Garry Tan. Startup School is a common first step before applying to the main YC batch, which invests through its own separate application.

What Y Combinator Startup School looks for

The online course has no selection. Anyone with an internet connection can join, including people who only have an idea or a side project. YC aims it at founders in the earliest stage: people turning a project into a company, and people deciding whether to become founders at all.

The in-person event is selective and YC hand-picks attendees, but it does not publish its criteria. For co-founder matching, a complete profile that states your idea, your skills and the role you want a partner to fill gives other founders what they need to reply.

How the Y Combinator Startup School program works

The online course is self-paced. You create an account, then watch recorded lectures grouped by topic: ideas and MVP, fundraising, growth, press, team building and applying to YC. There are no live deadlines and no cohort start date.

Alongside the lectures you can post weekly updates on your key metric, which builds the habit of measuring progress every week. The co-founder matching platform works on its own track. You fill in a profile, review suggested candidates and send invitations to founders you want to talk to.

The in-person Startup School event is a different format. It runs over two days in San Francisco, features talks from founders and YC partners, and attendance is by application. The 2026 edition was held July 25 to 26.
