About gener8tor
gener8tor is a startup accelerator and venture firm headquartered in Madison, Wisconsin. Troy Vosseller and Joe Kirgues, two attorneys who met working on startup transactions, ran its first program in Milwaukee in 2012. It has since grown into one of the largest accelerator operators in the US, with programs in more than 40 locations.
The flagship is the gener8tor Investment Accelerator, a 12-week investment-for-equity program that puts $100,000 into each company. Cohorts are very small. gener8tor accepts only five or six companies per cohort, and TechCrunch reported that it receives roughly 300 to 1,000 applications per program. Equity terms vary by program. For the Wisconsin program, one source reports $100,000 for 7.5% via a SAFE. The fintech track lists $100,000 in the current round if raising, or an uncapped SAFE with a 25% discount if not.
Current investment accelerator locations include Wisconsin, Nevada (Las Vegas and Reno-Tahoe), North Dakota, Nebraska (NMotion), Alabama, Delaware, Georgia, and California, plus global programs. gener8tor also runs gBETA, a free seven-week program that takes no equity and charges no fees. gener8tor says its accelerator alumni have raised more than $1.9 billion and created more than 8,300 jobs. Known alumni include PrettyLitter, Curate, GrocerKey, and Bright Cellars.
What gener8tor looks for
gener8tor backs high-growth startups and accepts only five or six companies per cohort. The company does not publish a detailed checklist on its main accelerator page. Several programs are sector or region specific, such as fintech, health tech, cleantech, and circular economy, so fit with the program's focus matters. Most programs expect founders to be in person in the host city for the 12 weeks. Startups with an early product, some traction, and plans to raise follow-on capital fit the investment model best.
How the gener8tor program works
The Investment Accelerator runs for 12 weeks with five or six companies per cohort. The small size lets gener8tor give each startup concentrated, one-on-one coaching from its staff, alongside mentor meetings with founders, investors, and corporate partners. The program is in person in the host city, and many tracks are sponsored by local partners, such as Northwestern Mutual or Cox.
The program closes with companies pitching to investors. Each company receives a $100,000 investment, with equity terms set by the specific program. Alumni stay in gener8tor's network and can get follow-on support.
For earlier founders, the free seven-week gBETA program offers coaching and investor introductions with no equity and no fees.
