About MEST Africa
MEST, the Meltwater Entrepreneurial School of Technology, is a training program, seed fund and incubator in Accra, Ghana. It is funded by the Meltwater Foundation, set up in 2008 by Jorn Lyseggen, founder of the media intelligence company Meltwater. MEST differs from most accelerators because it recruits individuals, not companies.
Participants, called Entrepreneurs-in-Training, form teams during the program and build their startups from scratch. The current format is the MEST AI Startup Program. It is a fully sponsored, full-time, residential program that lasts 12 months.
Participants pay nothing to MEST. Seven months of training cover AI software development, business basics, team formation and MVP building. Four months of incubation follow for selected ventures.
High-performing ventures can then receive up to $100,000 in pre-seed investment and join the MEST portfolio. MEST says it has trained more than 2,000 people from more than 22 African countries and funded 94 businesses. Applicants must be West or East African citizens aged 21 to 35 with software development experience.
Applications for the 2027 class ran from May 19 to July 20, 2026, with interviews in early October and contracts in mid-October. Alumni companies include the property portal meQasa, church management platform Asoriba and game studio Leti Arts.
What MEST Africa looks for
MEST selects individuals, not finished startups. It wants West and East African citizens aged 21 to 35 with a bachelor's degree, diploma or equivalent experience, real software development experience and a basic understanding of AI. Candidates should have an entrepreneurial, problem-solving mindset and cope with a high-intensity environment. They must commit fully for up to 12 months and want to run a startup full time afterward. Experience in cross-cultural teams, AI work or a previous venture is a plus.
How the MEST Africa program works
The AI Startup Program runs for 12 months. From January to July, all participants train full time in Accra. The curriculum covers AI software development and business fundamentals.
Participants form pan-African teams, validate ideas through customer feedback, and build and test an MVP. In August everyone graduates after an end-of-training pitch, and selected ventures move into incubation. From September to December, incubated teams do market testing, product iteration, deployment and user acquisition with mentor support.
They finish with a pre-seed investment pitch. In January, high-performing ventures receive pre-seed investment of up to $100,000 and move into the MEST portfolio. Recruitment runs through interviews in core countries: Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal and Kenya.

Startup perks after acceptance
Accelerator startups qualify for most startup credit programs. These are the ones founders claim first.

MEST Africa FAQ
When is the MEST Africa application deadline?+
MEST Africa has not announced its next deadline yet (2027 class trains January to July 2027, incubation September to December 2027). We check the official site every month and update this page when dates are published.
Does MEST cost anything?+
No. The MEST AI Startup Program is fully sponsored and participants make no payments to MEST. The Meltwater Foundation funds training, and the program is residential in Accra. The public listing for the 2027 class does not detail stipends or housing allowances, so ask the MEST team what is covered during the 12 months.
How much does MEST invest and for what equity?+
After incubation, high-performing ventures can receive up to $100,000 in pre-seed investment and join the MEST portfolio. MEST does not publish the equity percentage it takes. In 2019 it reported investing $100,000 in each of 11 startups from that graduating cohort. Not every team that finishes training gets funded.
Can I apply with an existing startup?+
MEST recruits individuals, not companies. Participants form new pan-African teams during training and build ventures there. The program is designed for people who want to start a company, rather than founders who already have a funded startup. Your selection is based on your skills and potential, and teams take shape during the seven months of training in Accra.
When do applications open?+
Applications for the 2027 class opened on May 19, 2026 and closed on July 20, 2026. Interviews were held in early October 2026. Based on that cycle, the next window for the 2028 class is likely to open around May 2027, but MEST had not announced it as of October 2026.
