Remix is genuinely free as open-source software (MIT license, now part of React Router). There are no paid tiers. Real-world Remix costs are $0 for the framework; you pay your hosting infrastructure normally.

The strategic decision: Remix's value is the philosophical commitment to web standards and the deep React Router integration — focused on web fundamentals (forms, progressive enhancement, server-rendering) and a developer experience that prioritizes the platform's capabilities over abstraction. For broader full-stack frameworks, Next.js is the dominant alternative and has overwhelming market share — for most teams choosing default in 2026, Next.js is the path of least resistance.
