What is MassChallenge?

MassChallenge is a nonprofit startup accelerator founded in Boston in 2009 by John Harthorne and Akhil Nigam. Its defining feature is the money model. It takes no equity and charges no program fee for its U.S. Early Stage program. Instead of a fixed investment, founders compete for non-dilutive cash awards that are announced at the end of the program. The organization pays for itself through corporate partners and sponsors, which is also why its programs are organized around industries those partners care about. Today the U.S. Early Stage program runs tracks in health, climate, finance, sustainable food and security. MassChallenge also runs Traction programs for later startups and a separate Switzerland accelerator, which offered up to CHF 1 million in cash and in-kind awards in 2026. Eligibility is broad. The U.S. Early Stage program targets companies from the idea stage through early market traction, with guidelines of under $1M in equity funding and under $2M in trailing revenue. Over its history, MassChallenge reports that it has supported thousands of startups that went on to raise billions of dollars, and alumni include Ginkgo Bioworks, Flywire and Bitso. It suits founders who want mentors, corporate pilots and visibility without giving up any ownership. It is not a source of guaranteed capital. Most participants get mentorship and partner access, and only a subset win cash.

How the MassChallenge program works

The U.S. Early Stage program runs for about three months in a hybrid format. The first and final weeks include in-person events, and the rest runs digitally, so founders do not need to relocate for the whole program. Each startup is matched with mentors drawn from the MassChallenge expert network. Programming covers fundraising, sales, product and partnerships, and corporate partners in each vertical meet with startups about pilots and problem statements. The program ends with a showcase where finalists compete for non-dilutive cash prizes and in-kind awards. The Switzerland program estimates founders spend roughly 2 to 10 hours a week outside its boot camps. The Healthcare and Life Sciences Traction program runs 10 weeks, and founders pay their own travel. There is no equity taken in any of these tracks.

What MassChallenge looks for

MassChallenge selects for impact and growth potential rather than a specific sector or stage. The U.S. Early Stage program is aimed at companies between the idea stage and early market engagement, generally with under $1M in equity funding and under $2M in trailing 12-month revenue, though these are guidelines rather than hard rules. Judges score the size of the problem, the strength of the team and how well the company could work with the corporate partners in its vertical.

How to apply to MassChallenge

  1. 1Pick the right program and vertical (U.S. Early Stage, Traction, or a regional program such as Switzerland) and check its eligibility guidelines.
  2. 2Submit the online application on apply.masschallenge.org before the round deadline. U.S. Early Stage has used a free application; some vertical programs have charged a small fee.
  3. 3Round 1 is judged online by experts, and every applicant receives written feedback.
  4. 4Strong applicants move to Round 2, a virtual pitch to judges, which decides finalist status.
  5. 5Finalists join the cohort and later compete for non-dilutive cash awards at the end of the program.

Does MassChallenge take equity?+

There is no fixed investment. Startups compete for cash awards that are announced at the end of the program. Amounts vary by program and year.
