SurveyMonkey is an online survey platform that lets you build a survey, send it by link, email, QR code or website embed, and read the results in one dashboard. It has a free Basic plan with unlimited surveys and up to 10 questions per survey. The SurveyMonkey homepage says the platform is used by 260K+ organizations worldwide, and it has been around for more than 25 years. Through SaaSOffers, you can start on that free plan and move to a paid tier only when your response volume or analysis needs call for it.

For a startup, surveys are the cheapest form of customer research you can run. You can ask 200 users whether they would miss your product before you spend a quarter building the wrong feature. You can find out why people cancel instead of guessing from a dashboard. You can track Net Promoter Score month over month, test price points before you change your pricing page, and screen people for customer interviews so your calendar fills with the right users. SurveyMonkey covers all of these jobs, from a 10 question product-market fit check on the free plan to a large study with a paid panel of respondents.

What Is SurveyMonkey?

SurveyMonkey is a survey and forms tool built for businesses. Its About page describes it as "a global leader in online surveys and forms" and says it provides answers to more than 20 million questions every day. The product has three main parts.

The first part is the builder. You pick a template, start from a blank survey, or describe what you want and let the AI builder draft it. You then edit questions, add logic, and apply a theme.

The second part is distribution. You can share a web link, post to social media, embed the survey on your site, show it as a popup, print a QR code, or send email invitations with reminders. There is also a mobile app, SurveyMonkey Anywhere, that can collect responses offline and run in kiosk mode.

The third part is analysis. Results update in real time. You can filter and compare groups, build shareable dashboards, export to CSV, XLS, PPT, PDF or SPSS, and on higher plans run AI analysis, thematic analysis, sentiment analysis, crosstabs and statistical significance tests.

On top of that sits SurveyMonkey Audience, a paid research panel. If you have no users yet, Audience lets you buy responses from people who match a target profile. SurveyMonkey says the panel reaches 335M+ people in 130+ countries, with pricing starting at $1 USD per response.

Key Features

Build with AI. Type a prompt that describes your survey goal and SurveyMonkey generates a draft survey you can edit. This is included on the free Basic plan. It is a fast way to get a first version of a churn survey or onboarding survey on screen.

Templates and a question bank. SurveyMonkey offers expert-built templates for customer satisfaction, market research, employee feedback and events. It also has a library of more than 1,800 pre-written questions. Using tested wording cuts down on leading or confusing questions, which is the most common mistake in founder-written surveys.

Net Promoter Score question type. SurveyMonkey has a dedicated NPS question and calculates the score for you. You do not need a spreadsheet to sort promoters, passives and detractors.

Question types for real research. The free plan includes 13 common question types, such as multiple choice, image and video, and text box. Paid plans add more question types. SurveyMonkey's feature list includes matrix questions, ranking and rating scales, sliders, file upload and form fields for name, email and phone.

Logic, piping and randomization. Skip logic starts on the Standard plan. It sends respondents to a later question or page based on an answer. Question and answer piping lets you reuse an earlier answer in a later question. Advantage adds more logic features. Premier adds advanced logic, block randomization and multilingual surveys. Randomizing answer choices and question order reduces order bias in pricing and feature ranking questions.

Custom variables. You can pass data you already have, such as a customer ID or plan name, into the survey through the link. Your answers and your account data then sit in the same row, which makes churn and NPS analysis by segment much easier.

Many ways to collect responses. Web links and social sharing are on every plan, including Basic. You can add surveys to your website on the free plan. Email invitations with scheduled reminders and thank-you emails start on Standard. SurveyMonkey also lists QR codes, text message surveys, website popups triggered by scroll or exit, and a mobile SDK for embedding surveys inside iOS and Android apps.

AI analysis and thematic analysis. On Advantage and above, you can ask a question about your data and get charts and summaries back. Thematic analysis groups open-ended answers into themes automatically. For a startup with 300 free-text churn reasons, that turns an afternoon of tagging into a few minutes of review.

Statistical significance and crosstabs. Advantage includes statistical significance testing across groups. Premier adds crosstabs, so you can compare answers across two or more questions at once, for example willingness to pay by company size.

Response quality checks. SurveyMonkey lists a feature that scans responses for profanity, gibberish, speeding and straight-lining so you can remove them. This matters when you use incentives or paid panels, where low-effort answers are common.

Integrations. The free plan includes the Zapier integration, which SurveyMonkey says connects to 7,000+ apps. Paid plans list 200+ native integrations, including Slack, HubSpot, Mailchimp and Microsoft Teams. Higher tiers add Salesforce, Marketo, Power BI and Tableau, plus API access.

Payments in surveys. Advantage lets you accept payments from respondents through Stripe or PayPal. Some founders use this for paid pilot sign-ups or pre-orders attached to a short questionnaire.

Team features. Team plans add shared brand assets, user roles and permissions, and comments on surveys. Analyst seats are optional, sold in pairs, and let teammates view, comment on and analyze shared surveys without building them.

A few details worth knowing before you pay:

  • The Basic plan's exact response limit is not printed on the pricing page. SurveyMonkey says you see it when you sign up or log in. Basic lets you collect more responses than that, but you can only view the limited number per survey.
  • On paid plans, extra responses beyond your limit cost $0.15 each, and limits count across all surveys and users.
  • At the minimum of 3 seats, Team Advantage works out to $900 per year and Team Premier to $2,700 per year.
  • SurveyMonkey Audience responses are sold separately, starting at $1 USD per response.
  • If you turn off auto-renew, you drop to the free plan at the end of the billing cycle. Responses over the Basic limit that are older than 365 days are then deleted under SurveyMonkey's data retention policy. Export anything you need before downgrading.
  • SurveyMonkey's own FAQ says that if you only plan to send one survey, Basic or Standard with monthly billing is the right choice.

For most pre-seed teams, the practical path is simple. Run small surveys on Basic. Buy one month of Standard when you need a longer survey or more responses for a single study. Move to Advantage Annual only when you run surveys every month and want the AI analysis tools.

How to Claim the Deal

  1. Open the SurveyMonkey deal page on SaaSOffers at saasoffers.tech/offers/surveymonkey.
  2. Click the claim button. It takes you to SurveyMonkey's sign-up page.
  3. Create your free Basic account with your work email. Use a company address so you can add teammates to the same organization later.
  4. Log in and check your Basic response limit, which SurveyMonkey shows inside the account.
  5. Build your first survey from a template or with Build with AI, then share it by web link.
  6. Upgrade from inside your account only when you hit the 10 question cap, need more responses, or need email invitations and exports.

Who It's Best For

SurveyMonkey fits founders who want a proven survey tool with real analysis, not only a form builder. It is a strong choice if you:

  • Run recurring surveys such as NPS or quarterly customer feedback and want trend charts over time.
  • Need to reach people outside your user base through a paid panel, which is useful before launch.
  • Have a B2B product and want survey data flowing into HubSpot, Salesforce or Slack.
  • Collect lots of open-ended answers and want AI to group them into themes.
  • Care about research quality: randomization, statistical significance and response quality checks.

It is a weaker fit if all you need is a sign-up form or a waitlist. In that case a simpler form builder does the job with less setup. It is also a larger spend for teams of 3 or more on Team plans, so check whether one individual Advantage seat plus Analyst seats covers you first.

How Startups Use SurveyMonkey

Product-market fit survey. Send your active users the question made popular by Sean Ellis: "How would you feel if you could no longer use this product?" with the answers Very disappointed, Somewhat disappointed and Not disappointed. Add two open-ended follow-ups: what is the main benefit you get, and what type of person would benefit most. This fits inside the 10 question limit on Basic. Pass the user's plan or signup date as a custom variable so you can compare segments.

Churn exit survey. Link a short survey from your cancellation flow. Ask for the main reason for leaving as a multiple choice question with an "Other" text box, then ask what they will use instead. After a month you will have enough free-text answers for thematic analysis to show you the top three churn drivers.

Net Promoter Score. Use the NPS question type and send it to customers on a fixed schedule, for example every quarter. SurveyMonkey calculates the score. On plans with alerts, you can route low scores to the right person through custom triggers, so a detractor gets a reply the same week.

Pricing research. Before you change prices, survey prospects and customers. Ask at what monthly price the product would feel too expensive, expensive but worth it, a bargain, and too cheap to trust. Randomize option order where it applies and compare answers by company size. Premier crosstabs make this comparison faster.

Customer interview screener. Instead of booking calls with anyone who replies, send a short screener. Ask about role, company size, current tools and how often they face the problem you solve. Use skip logic and the disqualification page to send poor fits to a thank-you message and good fits to your calendar link. You end up talking to the ten people who matter.

Pre-launch validation with Audience. If you have no users yet, SurveyMonkey Audience lets you target by age, job function, region and more, add screening questions, and collect responses in as little as an hour according to SurveyMonkey. It is a paid add-on, so start with a small sample.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Free Basic plan with unlimited surveys and AI survey building.
  • A large template library and 1,800+ pre-written questions help you avoid biased wording.
  • Built-in NPS scoring, statistical significance and crosstabs on higher tiers.
  • AI analysis and thematic analysis save real time on open-ended answers.
  • Integrated paid panel for research before you have customers.
  • Wide range of distribution options, from QR codes to a mobile SDK.
  • Zapier on the free plan and 200+ native integrations on paid plans.

Cons

  • The free plan caps each survey at 10 questions and limits how many responses you can view.
  • Many research features, such as crosstabs and advanced logic, sit on Premier, which costs $1,188 per year for one user.
  • Team plans require at least 3 users.
  • Extra responses on paid plans cost $0.15 each, which adds up on large studies.
  • Downgrading can delete older responses above the Basic limit, so you need to export first.

Alternatives

  • Typeform: conversational forms that show one question at a time. Good for polished, brand-heavy surveys and lead capture.
  • Google Forms: free with a Google account and sends answers straight to Google Sheets. Fine for internal and simple surveys, with limited analysis.
  • Tally: a form builder that works like a text document. Popular with indie founders who want quick forms with minimal setup.
  • Jotform: a large form builder with many templates, payment fields and approval workflows. Better for operational forms than for research.
  • Qualtrics: an enterprise experience management platform. Deep research tooling, usually more than an early-stage startup needs.
  • SurveySparrow: chat-style surveys with a focus on NPS and recurring feedback. Worth a look if you want a conversational feel for customer surveys.

Tips to Get the Most Out of SurveyMonkey

  1. Write the decision first. Before you add a single question, write down the decision the survey will inform. If a question does not feed that decision, cut it. This keeps you under the 10 question cap on Basic and raises completion rates.
  2. Use the question bank. Start from SurveyMonkey's pre-written questions and templates, then edit. Tested wording gives you cleaner data than questions written in a hurry.
  3. Pass data in, not questions. Use custom variables for customer ID, plan and signup date. Every question you do not have to ask makes the survey shorter.
  4. Export before you downgrade. If you buy one month of Standard for a big study, export your results to CSV or XLS before the month ends. Older responses above the Basic limit can be deleted after a downgrade.
  5. Run the same survey on a schedule. Send your NPS and PMF surveys at a fixed interval to the same kind of user. A single score tells you little. The trend over four quarters tells you whether the product is getting better.
