Tauri is a framework for building lightweight desktop applications using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for the frontend with a Rust backend. Unlike Electron which bundles an entire Chromium browser (150MB+), Tauri uses the system webview — producing apps that are 10-100x smaller and use significantly less memory.

The Electron Problem

Electron apps bundle Chromium. A simple note-taking app ships as a 200MB download that uses 300MB of RAM. Tauri apps ship as 2-10MB downloads using 30-50MB of RAM. For users, the difference is dramatic. For developers, the build process is faster.

Any Web Framework

Build your UI with React, Vue, Svelte, SvelteKit, Next.js, or plain HTML. Tauri renders it using the system webview (WebView2 on Windows, WebKit on macOS/Linux). Your frontend code stays identical — only the runtime changes.

Rust Backend

System-level operations — file access, notifications, system tray, global shortcuts, and auto-updates — are handled by a Rust backend. You write the logic in Rust or call it from JavaScript. The Rust layer is what makes Tauri apps fast and secure.
